In South-East Moravia, viticulture as an important part of farming influenced many components of folk culture. Therefore, the Open-Air Museum of Rural Architecture in South East Moravia includes also an exhibition area with vintners´ buildings, presenting various types of winepress houses and cellars from the villages of Veletiny, Vrbice, Prušánky and Blatnice. Along with the examples of viticulture development on the adjacent lands, we would like the visitors to understand the special atmosphere of vineyards and vintners´ houses. Viticulture has a very old tradition in South Moravia, which relates to the adjacent region of Weinviertel in Low Austria and to Carpathian viticulture in Slovakia. Passing over the possibility of wine growing in the Great Moravian Empire, the first reports come from the 11th and 12th centuries. Since the 14th century, we can meet the vineyards in many localities, even in those northern situated, such as Kostelec na Hané, Prostějov, Smržice and others. Viticulture was a lucrative business in which the church, burghers, nobility and many serfdom towns and villages became involved. The farmers changed old farmlands into vineyards first; then they stumped forests and even got manorial grounds to plant vineyards.
