Building D5

  • sawmill of the homestead No. 148 from Nová Lhota, local area of Čerešníkovy mlýny

History

Jiří Čerešník, the co-owner of the Čerešník´s mill, constructed the sawmill in 1913. It was operated by a bucket waterwheel driven by the water from the mill race. It was working, except a three-years-long break during the World War I, for nearly sixty years. In the 1950s, the water force was replaced by the electric motor, which drove the horizontal sawing machine until the 1970s, when the operation was terminated.

The timber structure of the building is boardedup and completed with stone masonry in its recessed part. The inner space is divided into the workplace and the sawn timber storage. The attic, which covers the entire space, is used for storing the agricultural tools and sawdust. The complete and functioning horizontal saw machine is driven by the electric motor that has replaced the bucket waterwheel. The installation of the motor corresponds to the real situation. The waterwheel has been preserved as a stand-by drive applied either in case of the possible interruption of electricity supply or for power saving in case of water sufficiency. The mill and sawmill have been measured and documented by the students of the Faculty of Architecture, Brno University of Technology, in 1974.
