Building C13

  • timbered two-storey chamber of the homestead No.14 from Pozlovice

Characteristics

  • storage shed located far from the dwelling for safety reasons. It occurs all over South-East Moravia with different forms

The chambers were built as independent two-storey sheds in the ethnographic area of Luhačovické Zálesí and they rank among the most characteristic building of the region. The oldest sheds were timbered of hardwood from local forests; later on, clay and stone prevailed.

The walls are coated mostly with mud plaster. The vaulted or conical roofs are covered with thatches or slates. The younger types of sheds had saddle roofs covered with burnt or concrete tiles. On the ground floor, there are the large boxes for grains storing - sůsky and škříchy. The second floor is entered up the outside stairs through a small roofed balcony; some buildings had the staircase inside.

For safety reasons, the chambers used to stand far from the homesteads either in the garden (Pozlovice) or the village green in front of the homesteads. If the space was restricted, the chamber was involved into the street line (Podhradí). It became a part of the house in the youngest buildings (Doubravy). The chamber served especially for storing grains, flour, beet or potatoes, tools, dresses and other valuable things.
